It is my honor to host the wonderful Serena Chase. Here is a brief introduction to her new book, Intermission: Intermission is a heart-wrenching contemporary YA romance set against a backdrop of musical theatre and family drama. With coming-of-age themes that honestly explore the gray areas of the moral dilemmas the characters face, this novel traces the path of one talented teen girl as she crosses painful thresholds of first love, faith, and betrayal to take the necessary steps toward adulthood, independence, and the dreams that set her heart on fire.
Shining a Spotlight on the Gray Areas of Life: Guest Blog by Serena Chase
The world is a hot mess. The moral and ethical dilemmas of our modern life are littered with enough well-camouflaged landmines to blow even the godliest of adults off course. But for teens, who have that hot-mess-of-a-world literally at their fingertips in ways we, as adults, could not have imagined at their age, the pressure to process and respond to familial and societal expectations and issues is immense. Add the element of faith to a teen’s life, the desire to live in a way that honors God and reflects the truth of the Bible, however, and those moral and ethical dilemmas can take on unexpected and often overwhelming layers that make discernment difficult to achieve.
As modern Christians, we like to believe there are black and white answers to every question we face, hidden within the pages of our holy book. And while it is true that the Bible should be the authority that speaks into our every situation, it does not have nearly enough pages to directly address every issue—or the nuances of each complex issue—presented in our lives. Oh, how I wish it did!
In my new book, Intermission, two Christian teens are faced with a situation in which exterior influences make the delineation between obedience and disobedience unclear. These teens want to do the right thing. They wrestle with the questions of their situation, truly seeking direction. But for every “this is the right thing to do” bullet point within their struggle, there is an equal and opposite caveat, a nuance, that makes each “this is right” conclusion “wrong” on some level.
Every day, our modern world poses hard questions without easy answers. Sometimes “What would Jesus do?” is a multiple choice question with the options of “all of the above” or “none of the above” or a variation of two, three, or twelve-hundred possibilities. As a writer of YA fiction, I aim to create characters with whom today’s teens can identify. That is why, in Intermission, I chose to shine a spotlight on the fact that, even for Bible-believing, truth-seeking Christians, gray areas do exist—but that personal growth and a deeper truth than what is being sought within the surface issue can be discovered on the sometimes painful, but beautiful path of an honest struggle.
Thanks so much for hosting me, Carrie. Happy hunting, all!
