The Death of Joseph Smith
The death of Joseph Smith is pretty much as I wrote it. On June 27, 1866, Joseph, his brother Hyrum, John Taylor, and Willard Richards were in an upstairs bedroom of the jail in Carthage, Illinois. Joseph was armed with a six shooter and fired it six times at the men in the hall. Three bullets didn't fire, but three struck three men. (ATM, page 12). The Warsaw men did have their faces blackened with mud and gunpowder, and did drop off history's radar. A friend of mine photographed the jail and I was struck with how low the window was as well as the depth of the window still.
Rick and I have often reconstructed crime scenes. When I did the same on this case, I was struck with the possibilities. A huge advantage was the differing accounts of the actual shooting.
